How to Calculate Time Duration

Enter a start time and end time, then optionally deduct break minutes. Zelmric returns hours and minutes, total minutes and decimal hours.

Hours Between Two Times

For times on the same day, duration is the difference between the end and start times. If the end is earlier than the start, the calculator treats the interval as crossing midnight.

Overnight Time Durations

Overnight shifts are common in work schedules. A start at 10:00 PM and end at 6:00 AM spans midnight, so the end time belongs to the following day.

Break Deductions and Decimal Hours

Break minutes are subtracted after the gross duration is calculated. Decimal hours express the remaining minutes as a fraction of an hour and can be useful for timesheets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the calculator handle an overnight shift?

Yes. An end time earlier than the start time is treated as the next day.

How are breaks deducted?

Enter the break length in minutes and it is subtracted from the elapsed duration.

What are decimal hours?

Decimal hours express minutes as a fraction of 60; for example, 30 minutes equals 0.50 hours.
